Joint Resolution California Latino Caucuses of ATU Locals 265, 1277, and 1555 Condemning the Use of Illegal and Unconstitutional Tactics by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE)
The members of the California Latino Caucuses of ATU Local 265, 1277, and 1555 stand united in the defense of civil rights, human dignity, and the fundamental principals of due process under the U.S. Constitution; Our Latino Caucus chapters require the support of the ILC to expedite this resolution.
WHEREAS, U.S Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has repeatedly been documented using illegal and unethical tactics in the course of its operations, including:
- Entering homes and workplaces without judicial warrants
- Misrepresenting their identity or authority to gain access or compliance
- Targeting individuals based on race, language, or perceived immigration status
- Conducting enforcement actions in or near sensitive locations such as schools, medical facilities, and courthouses:
WHEREAS these raids can create a climate of fear and distrust in the communities, potentially deterring individuals, regardless of immigration status, from seeking essential services like healthcare, reporting crimes, or engaging with local institutions
WHEREAS the disruption of families and communities resulting from these raids can have significant social and economic repercussions, including the potential negative impacts on children’s well-being and local economies; and
WHEREAS it is the role of the California Latino Caucuses of ATU Locals 265, 1277, and 1555 to represent and protect the well-being of all its constituents and surrounding communities, regardless of their immigration status.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the California Latino Caucuses of ATU Locals 265, 1277, and 1555
Request the ATU International Latino Caucus to formally adopt this resolution and
- Unequivocally condemn the use of illegal, and aggressive tactics used by ICE during immigration raids that may infringe upon the constitutional rights and human dignity of individuals within the community
- Will work to educate its members and the surrounding communities about their rights, empower and inform immigrant communities of available resources, and support immigrants facing enforcement threats,
- Commitment is affirmed to supporting polices and practices that ensure due process, access to legal counsel, and protection from unlawful searches and seizures for all residents.
- Calls on elected officials at all levels to investigate ICE misconduct and to strengthen legal protections for immigrants; and to cease raids and enforcement actions that may involve racial profiling or indiscriminate targeting of communities
