We regret to inform you that nuestro hermano ("our brother"), Juan A Orta, transitioned on Friday, March 17, 2026, at his home, surrounded by his loving wife, Susana, and family. He was 72 years young.

Juan was a vibrant member of Amalgamated Transit Union Local 956,

the local Latino Caucus chapter when it was active, the ATU International Latino Caucus, the Puerto Rican community, and above all, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and generous family man.

Juan was named an Emeritus Member after serving as the Northeast Region Representative (2005-2013) of the ATU International Latino Caucus. The footprints he leaves behind will be difficult to fill. His outgoing spirit, kindness toward others, and selfless service will be deeply missed.

Those of us who witnessed the chartering of the Allentown Chapter in 2002, attended the Allentown conference, and shared in caucus fundraisers know firsthand the warmth and hospitality Juan always extended. We honor him as a great man for his dedication to the ATUILC, his love of Christ, and his lifelong commitment to serving others.

Juan also helped establish the Puerto Rican Parade of Allentown alongside Raul Feliciano and was named Grand Marshal of the parade in 2002. In 2011, the AFL-CIO honored him with the John Werkheiser Award for his active leadership in ATU Local 956 and his community activism.

In 2012, Juan founded Latinos Moving Forward, where he expanded his community advocacy through voter engagement, supporting the election of local leadership, and creating opportunities for inner-city youth, including trips to Trexler Nature Preserve.

Hermano Orta retired from his job, but he never retired from his Local or from the Latino Caucus.
